The drawing below is 100 minutes and this time around I got the full figure on the paper and I seem to be getting a hang of the pencil. These monotype parties give me something to look forward to, they are like a lifeline in my art, as long as I'm able to get some prints done I know things will be alright. Can't wait until next month's party, I have already purchased my ticket for the next one and the one after that. Now I have to get some thumbnail sketcher ready for the next printing session. <p></p>L U I S C O L A Nhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511576933687114019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27246507.post-36390474665568941952022-02-21T15:06:00.006-05:002022-02-21T15:06:48.047-05:00Quoting the Past: Contemporary Landscape Ballpoint Drawing<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh40AFWfu6tEOEsrMlf29zktphs3S_k98NFlYJuqFfFFl9Raw_A9k0hh-G5kyDohvoSnaFoChzNAdOY9vJS7CS9-wfaz9cBTm6In3kCNaSKbFUBzTbWb0ZDpVnSyrExZ8hOn25F32A5YoeDvjCLmZ83h2fRQtu0AK2CYa4do9W1MitfpkHSEw=s1024" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh40AFWfu6tEOEsrMlf29zktphs3S_k98NFlYJuqFfFFl9Raw_A9k0hh-G5kyDohvoSnaFoChzNAdOY9vJS7CS9-wfaz9cBTm6In3kCNaSKbFUBzTbWb0ZDpVnSyrExZ8hOn25F32A5YoeDvjCLmZ83h2fRQtu0AK2CYa4do9W1MitfpkHSEw=w640-h480" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In April 2021, I began working on this ballpoint pen drawing in Central Park. A lot of things were happening in 2021, especially towards the end of the year. More about that later. At the moment I want to introduce my new website! I have been wanting to give my site a fresh facelift for some time but never got around to it. I spent two weeks designing it to get it to look the way I had envisioned it last summer. </p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjo-Rt67MwCeW3w6Ju8KZ6q2Qjw6oBSrqglTQF2tLJWSVcJ353QVdJw-Lw4lfsJne9cYJpyVRFIiIEpYwXK3BRo6eYEVj8nqog9zXuvt8VNiQN7-SJ4BgyyqjfPQ9M4PsSokRJO1oCZPgAyu1nb9R3PEc4qpoSHEKJ_QLRogo4plyybVK2Apw=s1024" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="791" data-original-width="1024" height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjo-Rt67MwCeW3w6Ju8KZ6q2Qjw6oBSrqglTQF2tLJWSVcJ353QVdJw-Lw4lfsJne9cYJpyVRFIiIEpYwXK3BRo6eYEVj8nqog9zXuvt8VNiQN7-SJ4BgyyqjfPQ9M4PsSokRJO1oCZPgAyu1nb9R3PEc4qpoSHEKJ_QLRogo4plyybVK2Apw=w640-h494" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The new site features galleries of my work, which are up for sale through a builtin shop. COVID lockdowns were still a thing, print shops and schools remained closed, and I had no access to work on monotypes or etchings. I had began studying etching earlier in 2020 but that was cut short. I thought dry point would be an easy and ideal process for me to try until I could resume my etching class. Scratch into the surface of the copper plate, and that's it, easy right? At first it seemed I was heading in the right direction. After each session of work I would ink up the plate just to check on my progress. On the plate, it looked good, and I thought I was ready to print.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhnLsINr5UZf9lhcpRGIYqWyZmW4Tu_5dajucWnbX7yE3k7UCyb8puxjMmlO6b-AUghYmS5wnY-LeW8iDBOmVbHVRI9JGYNOSTJbYJiAOh2H-apL3NfHs-upDtvcu5XMRy6VBCV_OeML3U7IlGqDIXmJiH3e0NB02g5S4t8wIxk95r6FG7c-g=s640" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhnLsINr5UZf9lhcpRGIYqWyZmW4Tu_5dajucWnbX7yE3k7UCyb8puxjMmlO6b-AUghYmS5wnY-LeW8iDBOmVbHVRI9JGYNOSTJbYJiAOh2H-apL3NfHs-upDtvcu5XMRy6VBCV_OeML3U7IlGqDIXmJiH3e0NB02g5S4t8wIxk95r6FG7c-g=w640-h640" width="640" /></a></div><p>After finally getting access to a press, I ran my drypoint through the press. The lines barely left a mark on my paper. I added more pressure to the press thinking that would fix the problem. Second try and still I pulled a very faded print. I gave up on drypoint after that try, and I now had on my hands two failed attempts. Months later I revisited the prints and decided to draw on top of them. I had just purchased new handmade ink by a local NYC artist and thought maybe this would be a good way to test it out. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhZiq0SLU1cMWO0dflnnwxbDPU_NE2ES1RO74_NtwAGnY_BBlz4Hg05jKGDDVNaYyyHsHhVq8AG2oopnUW0VmiR96CmI1xfvsUgI_SHaikdJ30p8k5I6QS4LPiNenY6iul2Efk5ET6p66owNM9k7R0VrUANvSYOBjk5_OoJBpFncc6bV8jdVQ=s800" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhZiq0SLU1cMWO0dflnnwxbDPU_NE2ES1RO74_NtwAGnY_BBlz4Hg05jKGDDVNaYyyHsHhVq8AG2oopnUW0VmiR96CmI1xfvsUgI_SHaikdJ30p8k5I6QS4LPiNenY6iul2Efk5ET6p66owNM9k7R0VrUANvSYOBjk5_OoJBpFncc6bV8jdVQ=w480-h640" width="480" /></a></div><p>I chose <a href="https://stoneinks.com/ALL" target="_blank">Stone Inks</a> beet ink because I was interested in getting a natural crimson red tone. To my surprise it was more of a walnut hue, but that didn't deter me from continuing with the drawing. The ink is so delicate, very transparent, and it needs multiple layers to get a good tonal range from it. This ink is not like the modern day inks, and might not be for everyone since it requires time and patience to reveal its beauty. After a number of days and quite a number of layers, I had completed this drawing, which is very different to what I have been working on. I have other colors of this ink to try, I have yet to figure out a good way of incorporating them in my work. In the meantime, I'll keep thinking about it and let those ideas steep in my head as I continue working on other drawings. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgPbZLH3aOy1bEUMQkNdkQKogQ45jkLO3WzxVDypQVQuA1lMA-cJwjpv5hfEgIFRURtE75iRSCttHCT5UNjCv0myQFK_7Pc_XO9UKjlBthXZeSlOeNCLEjJmgbF5eoyR3111KOwlHmo01jGocUU8fR1_3eoFSACHT72CmukKBigey_05UHa0g=s1024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="697" data-original-width="1024" height="436" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgPbZLH3aOy1bEUMQkNdkQKogQ45jkLO3WzxVDypQVQuA1lMA-cJwjpv5hfEgIFRURtE75iRSCttHCT5UNjCv0myQFK_7Pc_XO9UKjlBthXZeSlOeNCLEjJmgbF5eoyR3111KOwlHmo01jGocUU8fR1_3eoFSACHT72CmukKBigey_05UHa0g=w640-h436" width="640" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>L U I S C O L A Nhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511576933687114019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27246507.post-4316803181278368032021-10-02T13:48:00.000-04:002021-10-02T13:48:31.760-04:00In the Company of Ghosts<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj5tG65zXHvncuse5hS4LbDg13DL7KY28mc39akCMDBl9gD6uvBrB25KF0dwQXQdjoJ2ikymV879zlXGkMCJIMPVygePTw5gCZWHdJbXB9-LOjJkMK2XOUmxti0sUUhTkeZOW_Ze6ZTMmWI8PlW-Mqvl3gjmcjTi1bypFeSDi7zwFuzYDto4A=s1024" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj5tG65zXHvncuse5hS4LbDg13DL7KY28mc39akCMDBl9gD6uvBrB25KF0dwQXQdjoJ2ikymV879zlXGkMCJIMPVygePTw5gCZWHdJbXB9-LOjJkMK2XOUmxti0sUUhTkeZOW_Ze6ZTMmWI8PlW-Mqvl3gjmcjTi1bypFeSDi7zwFuzYDto4A=w640-h480" width="640" /></a></div></div><div><br /></div><div>It's hard to believe summer is over. As I worked on the drawing above I had no idea that 2021 was going to be a year of hard work. Last September I began this two page drawing while riding Metro North back to NYC from my parent's home in CT. That summer had been the most active and fun one I've had in years. This drawing took me right into fall as I worked on it through October, without realizing that things would get hectic in a few months. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VoMd_lUuPXU/YQqwyRa1yLI/AAAAAAAABtQ/8LuAUMDlm5YUep6pEB6O0Pf11nkKzvzHQCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VoMd_lUuPXU/YQqwyRa1yLI/AAAAAAAABtQ/8LuAUMDlm5YUep6pEB6O0Pf11nkKzvzHQCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h640/2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>As November came around, I continued my leisurely sketching, always accompanied with a hot cup of latte. Although things may have seemed calm on the surface, in the inside my gears were turning. 2020 had brought on the realization that my current job may not be all that secure, and that if it were to fold due to financial hardship, I would be left without a carreer or a set of skills that could be used in a different carreer/industry. So I took a loan and enrolled in a graphic design program to give my future a better chance. </div><div><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N7LjjdxHjg0/YQqwyakWzdI/AAAAAAAABtU/KMl2N-H49VIo5D93eFwOBRWZaU73lcfqwCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N7LjjdxHjg0/YQqwyakWzdI/AAAAAAAABtU/KMl2N-H49VIo5D93eFwOBRWZaU73lcfqwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h640/3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>In the new year I rushed to get unfinished drawings done, such as the tree portrait on the left page, above. I had started both pages in June and never got around to finishing, but this was the time. In February I would start school and I knew that it would demand most of time and focus. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xl2vUuUW0U4/YQqwyoo_hjI/AAAAAAAABtY/zmiouGE3WR4S_208ds6Foi3LLhi0_NcBgCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xl2vUuUW0U4/YQqwyoo_hjI/AAAAAAAABtY/zmiouGE3WR4S_208ds6Foi3LLhi0_NcBgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h640/4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Thumbnail sketches continue to fill many of the pages in my sketchbook. The drawing above was done as a test for one of the sample pens I received. I was intrigued by the mix of green/black ink, soemthing I had not seen yet. The challenge here was working with a 0.8mm tip, since I'm used to drawing with a finer pen. Eventhough I made it work, I think I will stick to a 0.5mm pen. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DshXuK_nDA8/YQqwysFvcfI/AAAAAAAABtg/UeCD-Ft6wbApm4ceHw_Rzc2QhukT9gFFwCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/6.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DshXuK_nDA8/YQqwysFvcfI/AAAAAAAABtg/UeCD-Ft6wbApm4ceHw_Rzc2QhukT9gFFwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h640/6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>This two page drawing was part of a uni-ball instagram take-over. This month I taught a two day workshop, and two more have been added to the calendar for September and October. I will also be teaching a class with Zebra Pen and Michael's in the coming months. I will make that information availalbe soon as things are solidified. In the meantime, keep checking back as I update you current studio happenings and projects. The event is hosted by The Teaching Studios of Art, the atelier I was a student of in 2009. We originally scheduled a two day workshop of August, but after it sold out and people were put in a waiting list, we added a second round for September with more spots available. That workshop has sold out as well. <div> <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ekWdw_9sJSk/YRvr__UOT0I/AAAAAAAABus/eDEv6jJ72OcLYQs21SL0IOAo2iqZ9mrkQCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="742" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ekWdw_9sJSk/YRvr__UOT0I/AAAAAAAABus/eDEv6jJ72OcLYQs21SL0IOAo2iqZ9mrkQCLcBGAsYHQ/w594-h640/2.jpg" width="594" /></a></div><div><br /></div>I had a great time discussing with students the different types of pens I use, and demonstrating my technique. Many questions were answered, and there were many laughs as well. </div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--dF8eXtfhiA/YRvr_6UBJHI/AAAAAAAABuw/nT1nwbUa01wSGhfE4m0Y-vevTr_aCi36gCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--dF8eXtfhiA/YRvr_6UBJHI/AAAAAAAABuw/nT1nwbUa01wSGhfE4m0Y-vevTr_aCi36gCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h480/3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>We all got to draw from a Corot print reproduction, this was my way of introducing them to the rollerball and instructed them to let themselves relax and let the pen glide through the use of gesture lines. Many people are intimidated of drawing with pen because they see it as an unforgiving medium. This exercise allowed them to loose some of that fear. </div><div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s7izCJtOJMg/YRvsAKmBdAI/AAAAAAAABu0/2ZbdK0_4ZcoEn-lGlDb7P4lYK-P9nF_kgCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s7izCJtOJMg/YRvsAKmBdAI/AAAAAAAABu0/2ZbdK0_4ZcoEn-lGlDb7P4lYK-P9nF_kgCLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/4.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br /><p>After everyone was warmed up and they received critiques, I moved on to the last part of the day with the final demo. I began drawing using a ballpoint pen and walked them through my process. On the second day of the workshop I will continue to work on this drawing and the students will get most of the day to work on theirs. More to come! <br /><br /></p></div>L U I S C O L A Nhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511576933687114019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27246507.post-22786312384870602732021-06-12T14:08:00.003-04:002021-06-12T14:08:48.924-04:00Show's Over Folks<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WtR9tkSRCC4/YMT23o6yDxI/AAAAAAAABpQ/mWWKb6GgFO8c_LOwBN1h0tpmUDEnLFmSgCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="592" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WtR9tkSRCC4/YMT23o6yDxI/AAAAAAAABpQ/mWWKb6GgFO8c_LOwBN1h0tpmUDEnLFmSgCLcBGAsYHQ/w474-h640/1.jpg" width="474" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>My exhibition, <a href="http://luiscolan.blogspot.com/2021/04/from-brooklyn-with-love.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #38761d;">From Brooklyn, with Love</span></a>, has come to an end. The reach is unbelievable, without exaggeration we are all able to connect to almost all people from around the world and access places, things, and information like no other time before. In the 2000s blogging was the way I reached a broad audience for my work. I used to keep in touch with a few international people through comments of my posts. In 2006 I had a very small group who followed my journey as an artist here, but then Instagram came in to the picture. Since joining the platform in 2013 my account has grown exponentially, my work can be seen in places I never thought it could. I constantly receive messages and comments from people who follow my account and look forward to seeing what I'm up to artistically. But things start to feel different and overwhelming when people begin to use you as inspiration. This year I have become aware that my work is having a positive impact on people from around the world, and all I can say is that I am very touched and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. </p><p>This post is dedicated to the artists who are looking at my work closely and are taking the time to either copy or use my drawings as a starting point. I get many messages asking me to tell them how to draw like me. You are asking for over 30 years of experience and hard work to be boiled down to a couple of lines. It doesn't work that way. You have to put in the work and just DO, and that's what these people are doing. Thank you again and I look forward to seeing your growth. </p><p> <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bhinU5M1jPo/YLu5BsXaS-I/AAAAAAAABl8/59txQS72tnogmJQZlpkTrralZ_ItMDblQCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/51226836686_2664db09ec_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; With each drawing I change the color of ink to fit with the tonality and hue of the remaining ink left over on the ghost. The drawing above takes this idea further with the use of watercolor. I painted and drew over an etching which failed to print correctly. I'm still trying to figure out what went wrong with this etching. Sometime this summer I will try to print from the same plate again in hopes that things go smoothly. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-U4iSTALzfpw/YKfxzh1yJII/AAAAAAAABhQ/Vl1ZlK2M6YoXXuRnOSbetPgz61rNd6cQwCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="628" data-original-width="800" height="502" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-U4iSTALzfpw/YKfxzh1yJII/AAAAAAAABhQ/Vl1ZlK2M6YoXXuRnOSbetPgz61rNd6cQwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h502/3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p style="text-align: center;"><i>River Scene</i>, 2016/2021, pen and ink over monotype ghost print, on Rives Heavyweight paper, image 6 x 8 3/4 inches, sheet 8 1/2 x 11 inches</p><p>In the meantime, work continues with this series of ink drawings which has awaken a very expensive habit of collecting fountain pens...one for every ink color. A moment suspended in time, that's what I've been told these landscapes look like, and it seems fitting since they were created during the year the world stopped. I have continued working on these drawings as I learn more about fountain pens and the differences between brands. I'm hopping to scale up the work this year, and perhaps use a glass pen which will give me more control of the weight of my lines. I'm also thinking of exploring other ink colors, which can get tricky since some ghost prints are darker than others and that changes the perception of the ink color applied on top. But that's enough shop talk for now and I'll leave you with this last set of landscapes from 2020. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-INum93AxOhA/YHC4jFEI94I/AAAAAAAABVQ/-Pott3WXHNs6Epvra-oBUrpNQtQHvq7bACLcBGAsYHQ/s800/2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="625" data-original-width="800" height="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-INum93AxOhA/YHC4jFEI94I/AAAAAAAABVQ/-Pott3WXHNs6Epvra-oBUrpNQtQHvq7bACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h500/2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>El Arroyo</i>, 2018/2020, pen and ink over monotype ghost print, image 6 x 8 inches, sheet 8 1/2 x 11 inches </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AkcAecCgx-s/YHC4jFqFhwI/AAAAAAAABVM/hr7PoHwe7dULMJHxkhWOz639kcdiyPVAgCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="625" data-original-width="800" height="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AkcAecCgx-s/YHC4jFqFhwI/AAAAAAAABVM/hr7PoHwe7dULMJHxkhWOz639kcdiyPVAgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h500/3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>Arboles y Pradera</i>, 2018/2020, pen and ink over monotype ghost print, image 6 x 8 inches, sheet 8 x 11 1/2 inches</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JxI6ni-fKrA/YHC4jiuEA5I/AAAAAAAABVY/Obep8jLwxBY3wmmTuN_JB99cWD8DjEZWACLcBGAsYHQ/s800/4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="623" data-original-width="800" height="498" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JxI6ni-fKrA/YHC4jiuEA5I/AAAAAAAABVY/Obep8jLwxBY3wmmTuN_JB99cWD8DjEZWACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h498/4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>Grassy Field Near the Beach</i>, 2006/2020, pen and ink over monotype ghost print, image 5 x 7 inches, sheet 8 1/2 x 11 inches</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5L5HqgpunY4/YHC4j9A1xnI/AAAAAAAABVc/nfi9S_Tuhn82YqniFYSAJPBGvybemBvLgCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="800" height="504" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5L5HqgpunY4/YHC4j9A1xnI/AAAAAAAABVc/nfi9S_Tuhn82YqniFYSAJPBGvybemBvLgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h504/5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>Barcos en la Orilla de un Rio</i>, 2016/2020, pen and ink over monotype ghost print, image 6 x 8 inches, sheet 8 1/2 x 11 inches </div></div><br /><br /><br /><p></p>L U I S C O L A Nhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03511576933687114019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27246507.post-82867306482089446162021-03-26T12:48:00.005-04:002021-03-26T12:48:53.450-04:00What have I been up to? <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-14vg3kG9LlU/YF1r9b7emKI/AAAAAAAABQk/4tdl1igZOwQbsQpJrYlMaAccBYbis5T3gCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="800" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-14vg3kG9LlU/YF1r9b7emKI/AAAAAAAABQk/4tdl1igZOwQbsQpJrYlMaAccBYbis5T3gCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h640/1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's been a busy year so far, and as many say, busy is good! I became a <a href="https://uniballco.com/" target="_blank">uni-ball</a> ambassador in December, and after receiving my first shipment of goods I began working on a drawing to test one of their pens. For the sketchbook drawing above, I used a pen that's in the same family as the pen that I've been using for years. This one in particular, Vision Elite BLX Designer, has an 0.8mm point and a green/black ink mixture. I'm used to working with a standard black Vision Elite 0.5mm point, so working with a thicker pen was more challenging than expected. The ink color was strange at first, but since then I have learned to love it; I think it lends it self to the kind of drawing I do. I have ordered another Vision Elite pen in this color but this time in .05mm and I can't wait to use it. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qpFD4xqPvbs/YF1r9fiWTmI/AAAAAAAABQg/f1jkpDSpgx8MHk3G9qTf7MGs1Mf-BFnrACLcBGAsYHQ/s799/2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="799" data-original-width="654" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qpFD4xqPvbs/YF1r9fiWTmI/AAAAAAAABQg/f1jkpDSpgx8MHk3G9qTf7MGs1Mf-BFnrACLcBGAsYHQ/w524-h640/2.jpg" width="524" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Work on the <a href="http://luiscolan.blogspot.com/search/label/ghost%20print" target="_blank">ghost print drawings</a> continues, although at a slower pace and you'll find out why later. It's strange to think that I have only been working on this series for only a year and yet it feels longer. I love what I have done with the ghost prints but I think I'm ready to explore other possibilities and push it further. This may take some time though, so in the mean time I'll keep hatching away with my fountain pens. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lIPUAXgFf2c/YF1r9R0_3UI/AAAAAAAABQs/-8f6r6OcpqoVjNQPUnIHw791ndwkeMtOgCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lIPUAXgFf2c/YF1r9R0_3UI/AAAAAAAABQs/-8f6r6OcpqoVjNQPUnIHw791ndwkeMtOgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h480/3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This year I was able to print an etching I begun while in confinement during 2020. I waited months before I was able to print it since printshops had been closed for a good part of the year. To my disappointment this etching did not print well and to this day I'm still trying to figure out why. The first two proofs I pulled came out very light, even after adding more pressure on the press on the second try. I kept the faded prints, I thought that I could make something of them just like the ghost prints. Weeks later I added watercolor and then went over it with pen. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TDtaVSZOKMs/YF1r9_oyPkI/AAAAAAAABQw/5KhzGs-7ULYJIf29hnwKbs-Zu936Qyt0ACLcBGAsYHQ/s800/4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TDtaVSZOKMs/YF1r9_oyPkI/AAAAAAAABQw/5KhzGs-7ULYJIf29hnwKbs-Zu936Qyt0ACLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/4.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In mid January I received a commission six sketchbook drawings from a collector in London. Things have become more digital, more people are working remotely, and brick and mortar shops (like the one I work for) are going out of business at an alarming rate. With this in mind I decided to enroll in a graphic design course, which will allow me to pivot to the digital world and still remain creative. This program will run through the end of this year and it is very demanding. I'm looking forward to what will come after I graduate in December. In the meantime I will continue working on my art, that's something that will never change. This has been the first physical exhibition I've been part of since early 2019, and it was amazing to see one of my pieces sharing the same space with an amazing group of artists. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YV5TiMqwGcE/YFonUlrx-qI/AAAAAAAABOs/4KJzJSLNRq8GxT7ZsXHKoxownPRAtYVIACLcBGAsYHQ/s800/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YV5TiMqwGcE/YFonUlrx-qI/AAAAAAAABOs/4KJzJSLNRq8GxT7ZsXHKoxownPRAtYVIACLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/2.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><p>These are a few photos of the exhibition installation, thank you to <a href="https://www.lisalebofsky.com/" target="_blank">Lisa Lebosfky</a> for sharing them and for throwing my name in the mix. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y2lL2jxCtcc/YFonUkfyceI/AAAAAAAABOw/NJaMgTtJt1I8MT94P6Bo9V404P-hgQK_QCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y2lL2jxCtcc/YFonUkfyceI/AAAAAAAABOw/NJaMgTtJt1I8MT94P6Bo9V404P-hgQK_QCLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/3.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><p class="" style="background-color: #fffefa; color: #222222; font-family: futura-pt; font-size: 16px; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;"><strong style="overflow-wrap: break-word;">Shades of Blue: Drawings, Watercolors, and Works on Paper</strong></p><p class="" style="background-color: #fffefa; color: #222222; font-family: futura-pt; font-size: 16px; overflow-wrap: break-word; white-space: pre-wrap;"><strong style="overflow-wrap: break-word;">Featuring: </strong>Juliette Aristides, Steven Assael, Anne-Marie Belli, Luis Colan, Andrew S. text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Work on this painting continues, there is not much to be said about this stage only that I keep moving forward finding the right color and atmosphere for this landscape. I have been asking myself as I paint, where is this place? Where is this path leading to and who is walking there? Is it me, or will a figure make an appearance? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VbXVcgqfsMI/YAPLeGxGFpI/AAAAAAAAGik/7IXXocz8V08_HLU55cmM235PTB0TtxPtACLcBGAsYHQ/s800/72A25C55-F58E-4E10-BA1D-CF3041450A16.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VbXVcgqfsMI/YAPLeGxGFpI/AAAAAAAAGik/7IXXocz8V08_HLU55cmM235PTB0TtxPtACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h480/72A25C55-F58E-4E10-BA1D-CF3041450A16.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I have been thinking of perhaps including a runner seen from behind running through this landscape, but as think about it maybe that might be a little cheesy. So I dropped the idea. As I continue painting I scrutinize all the elements of it, mostly the composition. As it stands the painting has a good start but something is missing and I’m not sure what. </div><div><p></p></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ihjHCISmUgQ/YAPLpQf2jRI/AAAAAAAAGio/p03qg-s9jb4XlDENDDGSyMGTHunqjma0wCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/B006CE5A-1C87-4638-BEE4-6588C30EFED3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ihjHCISmUgQ/YAPLpQf2jRI/AAAAAAAAGio/p03qg-s9jb4XlDENDDGSyMGTHunqjma0wCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h480/B006CE5A-1C87-4638-BEE4-6588C30EFED3.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As I figure things out I keep building the paint, adjusting colors, shapes, and having fun while pushing color around. It’s been a long time since I’ve worked on a painting, especially one larger than 11 x 15 inches. This current linen canvas is 16 x 28 inches, not my biggest painting to date, but it is more narrow than what I’m used to. Also this will be my first large oil painting from imagination, so the pressure is on not to mess up and waste a beautiful piece of linen. Recently I had to cover up an old unfinished painting because I didn’t think there was any hope for it. Seeing so many hours of work gone just like that hurts, but in the end I don’t want any bad work of mine floating around, so you either cover or tear it up. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AZ4HrjkzI6U/YAPL19mYQ8I/AAAAAAAAGiw/C7k9m7bjyqM7WYyAuw9nEJyfjPBj7mtHwCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/4DA1FB2A-4CAA-45E9-A0E1-27FA96388F39.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AZ4HrjkzI6U/YAPL19mYQ8I/AAAAAAAAGiw/C7k9m7bjyqM7WYyAuw9nEJyfjPBj7mtHwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h480/4DA1FB2A-4CAA-45E9-A0E1-27FA96388F39.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Working with Rublev oil colors has been an amazing change. The paint is ropier and leaves beautiful brush strokes when I lay it down. I don’t have to try hard to get this surface, the paint is doing it all on its own and I’m more than happy with it. During 2020 I made failed attempts; to be honest I have been failing at it for quite some time. I had lost interest, not in the process, but in the kind of work I was making. Things had become stagnant and predictable, and I became bored. Drawing was my new focus and it has been the reason why my following on Instagram has grown (two days ago I hit 40K). The more likes and follows I got the more drawings I made. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-etc8vNDziEs/X_yGoP3FQPI/AAAAAAAAGhc/J9cP0NfR0DQL8MXV99e9-Cv-MT9H8UskgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-etc8vNDziEs/X_yGoP3FQPI/AAAAAAAAGhc/J9cP0NfR0DQL8MXV99e9-Cv-MT9H8UskgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h640/2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Slowly I began immersing myself back into painting. First by re-tubing old paint that needed salvaging, or by mixing colors. I looked at unfinished paintings to see if I could continue work on them or if I needed to scrap them. A 24x30 inch landscape I invested many hours in has been completely covered to make way for new possibilities on that linen. During 2020 I had also been listening to podcasts and picking up tidbits that could help me in my own work. An advice from a painter in an interview was to shake things up by introducing a new brush shape or size, or maybe a new color. I think the podcast with most significance in helping me get back to painting has been the Art Grind Podcast. <a href="https://www.artgrindpodcast.com/podcast/ep-founders-of-natural-pigments-george-ohanlon-amp-tatiana-zaytseva" target="_blank">Their recent interview with George O'Hanlon and Tatiana Zaytzeva</a> awoke the interest I've had for art materials and their history. They spoke about their paint, the way it's made and the way it handles. I've always known about their paint being good and also being the closest we can get to the kind of paint the old masters used. Their oil colors are nothing but linseed oil and pigment, no other additives are mixed. I have used their paint before but only in small amounts, and mixed in with other modern color makers. So I decided to snap out of my painting funk and try a new color palette, and using mostly Rublev colors in one painting from beginning to end. So far this is working like magic and I am happy to report that my new painting is coming along nicely.</p><p><b><u>Current palette:</u></b> </p><p></p><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>White - mix of Rublev Lead White #1 and Williamsburg Titanium White </li><li>Williamsburg Ultramarine Blue</li><li>Rublev Chrome Ochre </li><li>Rublev Vicenza Earth </li><li>Rublev Lemon Ochre </li><li>Rublev Hrazdan Yellow </li><li>Rublev Ercolano Red</li><li>Rublev Chrome Green </li><li>Rublev Nicosia Green Earth </li><li>Rublev Cyprus Burnt Umber (Warm) </li></ol><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kwQbYbbiI60/X_yGoNFMEAI/AAAAAAAAGhU/GZXoYVz_DZ8d6pqkWoSY__rw93TVNskagCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="518" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kwQbYbbiI60/X_yGoNFMEAI/AAAAAAAAGhU/GZXoYVz_DZ8d6pqkWoSY__rw93TVNskagCLcBGAsYHQ/w518-h640/3.jpg" width="518" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Over a year ago I made an attempt to paint a landscape from imagination. I was inspired by a <a href="https://www.marcdalessio.com/" target="_blank">Marc Dalessio</a> painting of Italy, I loved the composition and the feel of the colors, and I thought I could take some elements from it and use it in my work. After the first layer I set the linen aside. Painting from imagination is very hard, I have always had a drawing or photo as reference if I am painting in the studio. A successful painting, at least a landscape, needs to be well planned for it to be successful. Here I was winging it and it is no surprise that I was not happy with the outcome. The canvas has been leaning in a stack on the floor for quite some time, and a week ago I thought it was time to see it through. Putting my new color palette to use I applied another layer of color, still searching for what will be the final image. Things started falling into place and I reached a composition that could work. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nhaMudvk7cI/X_yGotzWwcI/AAAAAAAAGhg/x9X3DuAbY7QrcYQVc3-FkXIZpsaiZ_vZwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nhaMudvk7cI/X_yGotzWwcI/AAAAAAAAGhg/x9X3DuAbY7QrcYQVc3-FkXIZpsaiZ_vZwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h640/4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The new colors are interesting, and I'm surprised as to how much chroma I can get from a mostly earth tone palette. The great thing about using Rublev colors is that I have had no need to dip my brush in my medium cups. The paint flows in a way I have not experienced before. Because I was not diluting the paint, the brushwork became more rich. I was beginning to see the kind of paint consistency I admire when looking at paintings in museums. This paint is allowing me to get the painterly texture I have been seeking in recent years. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3J0ku0eAUB4/X_yGohHFVaI/AAAAAAAAGhk/vOlz3BmwWCYF29zyg9IWk3GZafb2Sw_QgCLcBGAsYHQ/s800/5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3J0ku0eAUB4/X_yGohHFVaI/AAAAAAAAGhk/vOlz3BmwWCYF29zyg9IWk3GZafb2Sw_QgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h480/5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div>So what is the problem with using mediums? Modern oil paints are made stiffer, and 99% of the time are mixed with fillers, extenders, and preservatives to extend their shelf life. Nobody wants to see a tube of paint oozing oil in the store, so to keep the paint nice and thick additives are mixed in. Additives change the way oil paint behaves, it becomes short, and to make them flow on the canvas we've been taught to use solvents and mediums. Solvents can weaken the bond of the oil and thus compromising the strength of the paint film as it hardens over the years. Too much oil in the medium will cause color discoloration over time, and even cracking. I'm always afraid that I might be using too much oil in my paintings, even though I barely touch the surface of the paint medium with the tip of my brush. Using Rublev is a nice welcome change to my practice, although I should warn that because their paint is so pure, the pigments do separate from the oil in the tube. Every time you squeeze paint out you will get a substantial amount of oil. I either let it drain on a paper towel, or place a small piece of paper towel on top of the mound on the palette to let it soak up the extra oil. <div><br /></div><div>In all, I am very happy with the results I'm getting from this new paint. I'm getting some nice textures without trying, which I am very excited about. I will continue posting both here and on Instagram about the progress of this painting, so make sure to keep checking back. <br /> <p></p></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27246507.post-1262136620258206462020-12-30T20:09:00.003-05:002020-12-30T20:09:41.963-05:00Commission Drawings<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ir9NLcadXLc/X-oiNyqxVmI/AAAAAAAAGgM/UCpIEThRzgAnF8A_u3YJ2QsAszuc2SFqACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="640" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ir9NLcadXLc/X-oiNyqxVmI/AAAAAAAAGgM/UCpIEThRzgAnF8A_u3YJ2QsAszuc2SFqACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h640/1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div>This has been a very tough year for people around the world. Many lives have been lost and many face financial hardship, some with life long consequences. I have been very lucky and blessed that I was able to keep my job and continue making art without disruptions, aside from fighting COVID-19 for two weeks in March.
