Waited a Long Time

In July I had started plans to make a small portrait of my mother. I made a drawing and left it as that. I chose the painting support for this piece and covered it with a neutral brown tone but that's as far as I got. I became scared. Painting portraits or figures is something I don't do often since I'm always scared of failure. But I got myself in gear, and took Peter Yesis' advice about what do I have to loose!?! This weekend I started the painted sketch, and laying of color for this portrait. Little by little she's coming alive, and after waiting a long time to start I can say that I felt more at ease and excited seeing the portrait take shape.

I am glad you have accepted the challenge. I've had a similar issue with painting portraits. When you are finished I would like to hear about what you discovered while painting this painting of your mother

Luis. I'm also glad you are giving this a shot. You've made excellent progress... you mother looks like a strong beautiful woman. I've been putting off doing a portrait on my child for fear as well. You're inspiring me to just do it. Nothing to fear but fear itself.

Thank you Bob and Takeyce! I have only done one oil portrait before and it came out good. But haven't done it since because I thought it was beginners luck and did not want to fail at the second try. But things are very well with this new portrait. What I'm hoping to learn from this is that portrait should be treated just like other kinds of painting. After all it's just paint, and can be wiped off or painted over. Let's see how it goes.

I remember a while back seeing that drawing you did of your mom and at the time thinking what a strong, powerful face you depicted. This is a very nice evolution. I can imagine your trepidation, but what you have so far does evoke her presence, her fortitude, yet also the frailty beneath the tough exterior.

Ay, ay, ay, nuestras moms.

I'm feeling it bro, keep it up.

Hey Alejandro, thank you for those nice words. I guess her personality does come through, I'm happy it does, but this portrait does not do any justice to the real woman. She's the world to me and very proud to be her son. Ay, me pongo lloron pensando en ella.

Congratulations Luis! You should treat yourself. Visit the used bookstore. Our fear is always greatest before we try. After we do, the fear is always a little smaller. Great beginning. Your Mom will love the painting. Keep going!

Thank you Peter! I wish I had the money to visit the book store...no worries, I have enough books at home to look at.
