Painting of the Day

Tomato II, 2006, oil on canvas panel, 6 x 8 inches

It has been a lazy weekend for me. I thought I was going to get started on two paintings. One in oil and one in egg tempera. Don't know why I've been so distracted but I forced myself to get some work done. I decided to try to do one of these one session paintings. So I ran to my fridge and picked up a tomato. Nothing special about the tomato, I just needed something to get me going. I guess it worked because I completed this little one tonight. Was not into it at first but it grew on me and followed through until I was happy with it. I got satisfaction from this tomato not only by painting it but as soon as I was done with it I chopped it and used it in my chicken soup!

I likes this one! Nice strong color...Wait a minute...I thought you live in a small studio? So how did you run to the fridge...?

Another beauty Luis! Wonderful light and nice touch with the brush. Isn't the reward of eating what we paint worth the struggle to paint them?

The whole thing about running to the fridge is just a manner of speech.

Thanks Peter, I loaded the brush with a lot of paint....I'm still trying to get comfortable with so much of it. And yes it is a reward to eat this stuff after being painted.

nice one , you really have some nice colors in there. I understand you are attempting a more painterly approach, this is a good start, as I can see some paint on the surface. I really like your travel sketches, I always wanted to do that but also found the typical book to cumbersome, will have to try to find a moleskin.

I know nothing about art, but the way you've blended the colors makes the tomato look so real. I love it.

I really like the brusque handling of the paint - seems very appropriate.

Hmm, so you eat your subjects?

I like the light and shadow on this, and your choice of background wall color is subtle but makes it pop.

Hi Tod, always nice to have a new person stopping by. I'm trying hard to get more paint on the surface...doing a small painting in one session helps because you know you have to coplete it soon it makes you pile on the paint more. Some times I'm not sure if this is the kind of style for me though. I guess I'll have to explore some more.

Run Aroud Paris thanks for stopping by again. I'm delighted you like this painting.

Hi Jeff, I wasn't sure if the handling of the paint was right, I felt at times it got too muddy...I'm glad you think it seems very appropriate.

Christina, thank you for having a look at my blog, I love to see new bloggers leaving comments. The choice of background color was a last minute desicion...it was a grey brown. I thought it looked to muddy so I started adding a beautiful blue color by Old Holland. I love that blue!!!!
