Fruit of the Past

Cherimoya, 2006, oil on canvas panel, 6 x 8 inches

Last night I had make a late night trip to the grocery store across the street to buy tooth paste. Had run out that morning and didn't get a chance to buy some. As I was standing in line to pay for my stuff I look over to my right and see this green fruit. I saw it and paused....it looked very familiar and I knew what it was but thought "it's impossible that this is here." I picked it up and the little sticker said Cherimoya. I wanted to jump for joy. This is a Peruvian fruit, at least to my knowledge it is, that I used to eat when I was a little boy growing up there. It's been close to twenty years since I had some of this and I couldn't pass on the chance on getting one. My mother has looked for this fruit in markets in Connecticut, but no luck. I was lucky last night! I brought it home cut it open and set it down to paint. After painting was done I ate half the thing. Saving some for later tonight!

Luis- I like the painting and I love the story that goes with it. I think s many of the painting of small everyday things we all paint have a story for someone.
Keep up the great work!

Your descriptions are so much fun to read. I stopped to check your painting and now I want to look for this fruit at the grocery store. But I'm in Cleveland, so all I'm likely to find are apples and grapes.

Hi Christina, I was very lucky to find this fruit in the market. Was not expecting it at all. Maybe you should do an internet search for it see if it's sold online. That's if you're interested. There's a story about this fruit. It seems that when George W. Bush went to Peru not so long ago some one gave him this fruit to try...apparently he loved it because he brought back with him boxes of this delight!

Once again Peter thank you for stopping by and your comments.

it is very nice, and i think the words of your blog post, reveal the emotion that went into the piece.

I is painted in a way that brings nostalgia...

and even if i have never seen or eaten the fruit before..it seems like a memory from my past..

a masterpiece man!

keep it up.

Beautifully done, Luis. Andrew Wyeth said that one's art goes as far and as deep as one's love goes. I think your fondness for Peru shows itself through this one.

Hey Ming, long time since you've stopped by. Thank you for the praise, it means a lot.
Louis the stories I tell are just the honest truth, things I feel and experience.
Chunn, I love that quote and I thank you for using it in your comment. I'm not a big fan of Andrew Wyeth but I do admire his work, and this quote is the best description of HIS painting.

Lovely painting, great fruit.

I guess we're lucky here in LA, you can find cherimoya easily, even in non-Latino markets. There's even a Cherimoya Street in Hollywood!

BTW, I finally posted the Tallarín Rojo recipe....

Hi Luis how are you, i hope all is going well.
I love this painting because this happens to be one of my favorite fruits, and yes your mom can find it @ The super Stop n shop near where my parents live on Cromwell St. I have bought it there many times. she just has to get the ripe ones. But anyhow i love you paintings and the story you provide.
I know you will go far because of your talent.
And a little idea has come to mind, i might have a job for you.
Maybe you can do a painting for me, i have pictures of when i went to Argentina and i can get pics of Peru, i would love to have a Painting of something that represents both cuontries but coming together as one. This would represent Pablo and I. (your cousin)
Please contact me, love you.
Te mando un beso y todos mis buenos deseos para ti.
